My Favorite Books! (The Nerdy Bookworm Tag)

Greetings, friends! Not too long ago, I was tagged by a fellow blogger to answer some questions about books! Fortunately, discussing books is one of my favorite things to do. When my book-loving friends and I get together, we are often known to talk too fast for normal human beings to comprehend. Hopefully, though, my ramblings will make sense. Without further ado, let us begin!

The Nerdy Bookworm Tag

For this tag, I was nominated by my friend Ashley Everhart! She and I collaborated a few months ago to interview each other on our blogs. Thank you very much, Ashley, for tagging me! Thanks also to Caleb E. King for creating this awesome tag! According to the rules, I am now supposed to answer the Five Nerdy Bookworm Questions! (I grin every time I type “nerdy bookworm.”)

1. What is your favorite book(s) of all time?

Whenever someone asks me this question, my go-to response is The Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson—especially the last two books of the series.

When compared to the more lighthearted voice of the first two books, The Monster in the Hollows and The Warden and the Wolf King have a much darker, heavier theme. I attribute this to the growth of the main character throughout the series. Janner begins as a selfish, slightly immature teen who wants responsibility but hates having to look after his younger siblings. With each book, he learns difficult lessons and becomes a much stronger, wiser character. I relate a lot to Janner, and he is probably my favorite book character of all time. Close behind him on the list of favorites are Artham and Leeli.

If I had to choose just a single book as my favorite, I would choose Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery.

I love this cover, too!

I absolutely adore this book. It never grows old no matter how many times I read it. Anne of Green Gables is the story of an orphan searching for a home and a dreamer who finds beauty in every ordinary thing. Anne is a very charming, whimsical character, and my favorite redhead in fiction. As a child, I found her misadventures to be both entertaining and inspiring. I learned from Anne that growing up does not mean losing one’s imagination. A person can still reach for the stars while keeping their feet on the earth. That is my outlook on life—I love to dream and find pictures in the clouds, but I also know the value of being grounded on something practical.

2. What’s your biggest pet peeve when it comes to people handling books?

Ooh, that’s an interesting question. While I love books and treat them with care now, as a child I thought it was normal to lay a book face-down on a table or fold over one corner of the page. Before anyone comes at me with pitchforks and frying pans, let me say I don’t do that anymore, nor do I condone such behavior! I now have a plentiful supply of bookmarks which I use often.

While creasing pages and breaking book spines is certainly bad, my biggest pet peeve is when people eat or drink around books. That’s just a disaster waiting to happen. Even just a simple water spill can make the pages wrinkle up, and no one wants to find crumbs in a library book!

3. In your opinion, how big does a book have to be for you to be intimidated to read it?

I have read lengthy tomes before, most notably The Lord of the Rings. When I first picked up that book, I was slightly intimidated, but I have found that once you become immersed in the story, you forget how many pages there are. That said, I believe I would be intimidated to read any book over 800 pages unless it was highly recommended by a friend.

4. What’s your favorite book format? (Paperback, Hardcover, E-book, Audiobook, etc.)

Audiobooks are okay, but I don’t listen to them often—unless you count when my mom reads out loud to my family. I’m not one for e-books, either, because I don’t like staring at a screen for hours at a time. Physical books are my personal preference. There’s something comforting and irreplaceable about the feeling of crisp pages beneath your fingertips. Now, hardback or paperback? There are certainly perks to hardcovers, but I find that paperbacks are much easier to read, find, and take along on an adventure. Plus, they are also much cheaper, which is good if you don’t have much money to spend.

5. What are the first things you do when you pick up a book?

I look at the cover and the description of the book. Oftentimes, a cover won’t be the deciding factor for me unless it looks especially cool, sinister, or uninteresting. Even if a book cover looks uninteresting, it might still hold a gem inside it, which is why I try to always read the descriptions.

This cover is cool, but it wasn’t interesting enough to my 13-year-old self.

For example, the cover for the paperback of On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness was not extremely interesting enough to my thirteen-year-old self. It looked more like a history book than a work of fiction (despite the dragon on the cover). After reading the back of the book, though, I became much more enthusiastic. I am very glad I chose to read the book instead of putting it down just because the cover didn’t catch my fancy. Conversely, even if a cover looks extremely interesting, it might disguise the worst story you’ve ever read. One last thing I will do when I pick up a new book is read the first few pages just to see if I like the author’s writing style. When I did this with On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness, I was hooked instantly!
